General Questions
We offer a full range of Florida Building Code–approved hurricane protection, including roll-down shutters, hurricane screens, accordion shutters, Bahama shutters, colonial shutters, storm panels and fabric. Each option provides different levels of protection, convenience, and appearance, so we help you choose the best fit for your home and budget.
HVHZ includes only Miami-Dade and Broward counties. If you live outside those counties, you are in a non-HVHZ area. Even though HVHZ standards don’t apply to the rest of Florida, we still install shutters using top-tier, code-approved products suitable for your wind zone.
For more info about HVHZ zones check out our article below:
Yes. All our shutters come with Florida Product Approval or Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance (NOA). We only install products that meet the required wind load and impact standards for your region.
Impact windows provide strong protection during storms but we have customers all the time add hurricane shutters for 2 main reasons.
- Customers get hurricane shutters to protect against water intrusion due to high wind pressure. A lot of customers report their hurricane windows and sliders leak water into the house during high winds and rain causing severe water damage. Adding hurricane shutters will help prevent driving rain from entering the windows and sliders.
- Impact windows can still break – the outer layer of impact glass will crack/break in the event of a impact. Hurricane shutters add an additional layer of protection.
Our shutters are made from high-strength aluminum designed for extreme wind loads. Storm panels are available in aluminum or clear polycarbonate. All materials are corrosion-resistant and engineered for Florida’s coastal environment.
Installation & Permitting
In most Florida municipalities—including Palm Coast, Flagler County, St. Johns County, Volusia, and others—a building permit is required for hurricane shutters. We handle the entire permitting process for you.
NOTE: Shutters installed for decorative purpose – Example: Deco Bahama Shutters, Motorized Screens – do not require a permit.
Our lead times vary depending on seasonality and product type. Our main page has our most up-to-date install lead times for each of our products.
Once your permit is issued and materials are ready, installation usually takes 1–2 days depending on the size of your home.
Yes. We take care of everything permit related: submitting plans, product approvals, engineering (if needed) and scheduling inspections.
If you are in an HOA you will need to obtain HOA approval. This is something we can guide you through as we have worked with almost every major HOA community in Flagler, Volusia and St. Johns.
Most HOAs require a simple packet including product approvals, color options, drawings, and photos showing where shutters will be placed. We provide all required documents and assist with the approval process.
If your community requires HOA approval – we will not manufacture or order any of your products until you get approved. This way if we need to make alterations to your products ordered you will be able to.
Operation & Usage
Accordion shutters open and close fairly easy with little effort. However larger stacks (very wide) or tall openings may require a little more strength to open/close due to the added weight.
Roll Shutters that are not motorized operate smoothly. However, like accordion shutters, very large/tall roll shutters can require a little extra strength to fully close and open. We do not recommend manual pull down shutters for anyone with limited finger/arm strength. If you have any questions about what is required to open/close a roll shutter please visit our showroom. We have full size pull down roll shutters you can try on your own to see if you are comfortable with operating them.
Storm Panels require installation before a storm, but they are lightweight and easy to store.
Yes. Most motorized shutters are available with a manual override crank so you can operate them even if power is lost. Please not we only install manual crank on the outside of roll shutters so the door/opening needs to be accessible from the outside to operate the manual override.

Safety & Building Code
Hurricane shutters aren’t classified by a specific wind speed (like 140 mph). They are rated by design pressure, which is a structural engineering measurement of how much wind force the shutter system can tolerate. This ensures the product is tested for real-world storm conditions—not just theoretical wind speeds. We have a full detailed write on below:
Yes. Even replacing existing shutters typically requires a permit because updated product approvals and code requirements must be documented. We handle all permitting for you.
